Course Description

Memoir Writing: A Million Little Truths (Online Course) (EGL 271 W)
This course is designed to help us write our way into our own storied truths and true stories. We will read master memoirists and complete a series of the writer’s equivalent of stretching exercises, using the results of these assignments and readings as springboards for creating our own work. Questions we will consider include: How did we become the people we are today? Does nonfiction leave room for “invention”? Is there a way to write about living people without offending them? Equal parts literary discovery and self-discovery, this online course will build toward the writing of a longer essay that we will critique in a considered and respectful manner, our sole intent being to help each other improve our writing. As the topics of memoir are fodder for poetry and prose, this course is open to writers in all genres.

Created in close partnership with the Stanford Creative Writing Program, this online course will be useful for students looking to improve their craft. Because this course can be taken anywhere, anytime, it is designed to be attractive to those students who live far from campus, or who lead busy lives and can benefit from the flexibility of the online format.
