Course Description

Putting a Spin on Science Writing (Online Course) (EGL 283 W)
Ever wonder how some scientists successfully captivate an audience with a subject as simple as a puddle of water or as complex as a supernova? How do science writers such as Stephen J. Gould or Robert Sapolsky “spin” science to make it accessible and engaging? This online course will provide professional and amateur scientists with tools and techniques to hook readers with the first sentence. We will begin by reading and critiquing short science essays on a variety of topics, then we will advance to writing short essays based on current scientific articles. These exercises will help hone science writing skills and your unique voice, preparing you to research and write your own longer science essay, which the rest of the class will critique. This course will also prepare you to submit your writing to science magazines, starting with the query process and ending with submissions of your finished work.

Created in close partnership with the Stanford Creative Writing Program, this online course will be useful for students looking to improve their craft. Because this course can be taken anywhere, anytime, it is designed to be attractive to those students who live far from campus, or who lead busy lives and can benefit from the flexibility of the online format.
