Fiction Writing: Voices that Live (Online Course) (EGL 284 W)
Consider Jason Compson in The Sound and the Fury, or Steven the Dog in Dave Eggers' short story After I Was Thrown in the River and Before I Drowned. As anyone who has read these works will attest, a vibrant, engaging voice is often the difference between compelling fiction and prose that simply falls flat. Of course, a voice must often be "reined in" in order for our stories to reach their fullest potential, and this course will examine both the strengths and potential pitfalls of "voice-driven" fiction. In the first half of the quarter, readings of published examples will be supplemented by short assignments designed to jumpstart the creation of lively, gripping characters. In the second half, each student will hand in a ten- to twenty-page short story or novel excerpt, and students will constructively critique their classmates' work.
Created in close partnership with the Stanford Creative Writing Program, this online course will be useful for students looking to improve their craft. Because this course can be taken anywhere, anytime, it is designed to be attractive to those students who live far from campus, or who lead busy lives and can benefit from the flexibility of the online format. short fiction has been featured in The Massachusetts Review, The Greensboro Review, and The Beloit Fiction Journal among others. He received an MA in English and Writing from the
University of New Hampshire.
