ARB 01
(ARB 01)
This course is intended for anyone interested in learning the Arabic alphabet as well as basic communication skills in Arabic. Instead of emphasizing the complex grammatical and syntactical structure of the language, this course will spotlight useful Arabic words, phrases, and sentences in a way that will equip students to communicate on a basic level with native Arabic speakers. The course includes an introduction to the alphabet via CD-ROM. But the bulk of the course will concentrate on using, pronouncing, and understanding Arabic expressions through class participation and interaction with fellow students and the instructor. There will also be many discussions on various aspects of Arab culture that are clearly reflected in the Arabic language itself. Also, several meetings will highlight samples from various Arabic cultural productions including music, film, news, and a brief survey of Arabic literature (in English).
Please note that the textbooks assigned for Level 1 courses are used throughout the language course sequence. Also, where possible, course sequences will remain on the same weeknight with the same instructor.
