Beginning Chinese I

(CHN 01)

This course is designed for students with little or no knowledge of Chinese. With an emphasis on conversation and an introduction to reading and writing Chinese characters, it focuses on the acquisition of basic communication skills for travel, business, and everyday use.

Please note that the textbooks assigned for Level 1 courses are used throughout the language course sequence. Also, where possible, course sequences will remain on the same weeknight with the same instructor.

Yu-hwa Rozelle, Lecturer in Chinese

Yu-hwa Rozelle, a native speaker of Mandarin, has taught Chinese at Stanford since 1990. She specializes in the poetry and prose of early 20th-century China.
