Stanford Summer Theater: Public and Private Vengeance—Electra and the Trojan War

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT AND THERE IS NO WAITLIST.

Celebrating its eleventh season, Stanford Summer Theater (SST) presents The Electra Festival, an exploration through theater and film of one of the great mythic heroines. Electra’s story—and the saga of the house of Atreus, the Trojan War, and its aftermath—have inspired playwrights, novelists, composers, film directors, and thinkers over the centuries. The Electra Festival allows us to trace the influence of this classic myth from ancient Athens to the contemporary world.

To explore the Electra myth in various historical and political contexts, the Continuing Studies Program invites you to the symposium “Public and Private Vengeance—The Trojan War and Electra.” Interweaving lectures, short performances, and panel discussions, the symposium includes a delicious outdoor Greek lunch (with retsina!) and a ticket for a performance of Sophocles’ Electra.

Symposium topics include Electra in the classical world, the Trojan War in later drama and literature, Electra in the visual arts, the house of Atreus in opera, and the influence of the Electra myth on Freud and Jung. Symposium faculty include Richard Martin (Anthony E. and Isabelle Raubitschek Professor in Classics), Jean-Marie Apostolides (Professor of Drama and Bonsall Professor of French), Bill Eddelman (Associate Professor of Drama, Emeritus), Thor Steingraber (opera director with the San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and many others), Ciara Murphy (PhD candidate in Drama), and SST guest artists.

Saturday, August 1, 9:30 am - 5:00 pm
$80 (includes morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and cookies)
Event fee is non-refundable.

Sponsored by Stanford Continuing Studies, Stanford Classics and Drama Departments, the School of Humanities & Sciences, the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, and the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts.
