Have you written essays or articles that you’d like to publish but aren't sure how to get them in front of editors who can bring them to the public? Do you have ideas that you want to pitch to an editor but don’t know how to craft the query? In this course, you will learn how to package and sell your ideas and stories so your work reaches your target readership. We’ll explore the nitty-gritty of whom and how to pitch, addressing such questions as when to pitch for print or online, what constitutes a timely piece vs. an evergreen one, when it’s okay to write for free, whether to send a completed draft or just a pitch, how to tell if you're being compensated fairly, how to choose the right publication, and much more. Come prepared to hone your unique offerings as a writer, delve into what and whom you hope to influence with your work, and create or sharpen your pitches and queries. There will be opportunities to share your pitches and receive feedback and advice from the instructor and classmates. Come with publishing and pitching questions, ideas you want to develop, or work you want to pitch, and get ready to introduce your writing to the world.
