Within a supportive, relaxed, and sociable atmosphere, we will approach drawing as a powerful method of expression involving physical dexterity, mental flexibility, and emotional courage. In this course, we will use pencils to explore a variety of techniques, such as crosshatching, gesture, gradation, and contrast. We will also explore various kinds of subject matter, including still life, landscape, and drapery, as well as cover the fundamentals of composition and layering. Online discussions will touch upon the creative process, the importance of play, embracing imperfection, and the balance between order and disorder. Step-by-step image demonstrations, information on artists and techniques, and short writing projects will complement our studio work. The goal of this course is to give students the basic physical, mental, and emotional skills necessary to begin their own drawing practice.

This course is designed for beginners and those with minimal drawing experience. Because of the higher enrollment compared with a traditional in-person art studio course, students will not receive instructor feedback on every drawing post. Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course and can expect to spend an additional $35–$55 on these materials.
