America’s greatest successes may be fueled by innovation, but they are protected by intellectual property (IP) laws—a bedrock underlying every successful new business, entrepreneur, and inventor. This course provides a foundation on the basics of IP law. It’s designed for nonlawyers—or anyone working on something worth protecting. Maybe you need to file a provisional patent to secure your invention’s priority date while you develop the technology and explore its market potential. Or maybe you’re working on a new app and need to understand how to protect the app’s code and any unique visual design elements. IP will play a role in determining your success and outcome. Each class will cover a specific topic, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, enforcement/litigation, and AI issues. This course will arm you with enough knowledge about IP law to understand and act upon it by teaching you how to identify fundamental IP-related issues in your professional domain and understand both sides of an AI debate.

This course does not provide legal advice.
