This course will explore how to translate the fundamentals of photography into images that convey a sense of place. We will discuss how to create expressive landscapes, environmental portraits, and photo essays that reveal your unique impression of a destination. We will see how lenses of different focal lengths portray the same scene in different ways and how shutter speeds and apertures can be used to interpret time and space. We will learn how to use people or other elements to show scale, photograph in low light, capture action and activity, and make images from different perspectives. Additional topics include how to do preparatory research, select and pack equipment appropriate for your destination, improvise on the road, anticipate action, and apply familiar rules of composition to unfamiliar scenes. Throughout the course, you will have opportunities to share your images online with others in the class. We also will cover how to store photos when traveling, as well as editing, archiving, and sharing photos once you return home. Actively integrating class themes and techniques into your photography, you will be encouraged to evolve your unique photographic vision, whether you plan to travel around the corner or around the world.
